30 Years of Building Futures

In 2026, Summit Academy OIC celebrates 30 years of creating pathways to family-sustaining careers. What began as a single construction training has grown into five industry-aligned career pathways, serving more students than ever before.

Because of the support of our community, we closed last year with record-breaking enrollment. That momentum continues into 2026, and we are on track for a record number of job placements. More graduates than ever are entering high-demand careers, strengthening their families and the Twin Cities community.

From Curiosity to Career

How Isaiah’s Curiosity Led to a Long-Term Career in a Field He’s Passionate About

When Isaiah Charleston enrolled in Summit’s IT Specialist training, he was guided by curiosity and a desire to learn. “What pushed me to enroll in the IT training was just the desire to learn,” he says. “IT was something that I was passionate about.”

His curiosity defined his Summit experience. “Every day I was either asking myself or somebody else a question,” he recalls.

One of his proudest moments came when he passed his certification exam. “That was definitely the best part,” he explains. “It was a bit of a stressor.” The accomplishment became a tangible reflection of his growth and persistence.

Today, Isaiah works as an AV Tech Support Technician at Best Buy. What began as a leap of faith has become the launchpad for a long-term career in a field he loves.

Inspired by Impact: Kirsten’s Leadership in Action

For board member Kirsten Walstien, Summit’s impact became clear during her very first conversation about joining the organization.

At an introductory lunch with Summit’s former President & CEO, she watched as multiple people stopped to share how Summit had changed their lives. “It was so inspiring,” she recalls. “It made me feel like it was something I wanted to be a part of.”

A Minnesota native and graduate of St. Olaf College, Kirsten joined the board five years ago, eager to grow as a leader and serve a mission rooted in education and opportunity.

Through board service and volunteer leadership, she has witnessed the commitment Summit students make every day. “Twenty weeks doesn’t sound like much, but they’re giving up a lot,” she says. “They’re willing to take what probably feels like a risk to sacrifice now to get ahead.”

From student speakers to development committee meetings and event volunteerism, Kirsten remains deeply inspired by Summit’s mission, and she’s committed to expanding its impact.
