As Veronica celebrates her one-year anniversary as a sawyer at Simonson Lumber, she reflects on how Summit’s construction training was the first step to a fulfilling career.

Veronica enrolled in Summit’s electrician training in 2023, where she gained the technical and professional skills needed to succeed in the construction industry. She participated in mock interviews and worked with Summit staff to refine her resume, which increased her confidence.

After graduating, she was hired by SCR, but soon realized she wasn’t tall enough to pull cables and do other everyday tasks as an electrician. Guided by the foundational construction skills she learned at Summit, Veronica decided to pivot and explore a career in carpentry.

Now, as a sawyer, Veronica engages in physically demanding tasks—lifting and carrying lumber that matches her own weight and size—everyday. She’s continuously surprised by the additional skills and strength she’s developed. “I love my job. I love the people I work with. I love the challenges. I’ve loved seeing myself adapt and increase my strength,” she shares. “It’s incredible—as a woman—how adaptable you are.”

In the future, Veronica still sees herself at Simonson Lumber. She hopes to move into a leadership role, eventually becoming a supervisor.

Veronica also enjoys community outreach and recruitment. She hopes to encourage more women and youth to join the trades, taking part in Simonson’s youth-focused initiatives and returning to Summit to assist with mock interviews. “I love going back to where I started and engaging with students who have similar stories and backgrounds as me. I’m reminded of my drive and motivation,” she says.

Through hard work and passion for the trades, Veronica not only built her own future—she’s helping build a path for the next generation of tradeswomen.
