Jisela enrolled in Summit’s carpentry training with the goal to build a future where she was happy and fulfilled.

Before learning about career opportunities in construction, Jisela felt frustrated and unsure of her future. As she watched the people around her find their careers, she felt lost and behind. She knew she didn’t want to enroll in long-term schooling, but she wasn’t aware of other existing career paths. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do,” she explains. “Growing up I loved to fix things and put things together, but I didn’t know that could be a career.”

After moving to the Twin Cities, she began exploring options outside of 2- and 4-year colleges, which is when she found Summit.

Summit provided her with the foundation she needed, not just in technical skills but also in confidence and direction. She thrived in the hands-on learning environment, where instructors encouraged independence while offering crucial support. “The instructors allowed us to make our own mistakes, but they always helped us to understand and fix them,” she says.

During her time at Summit, Jisela found a clear career path that brought both professional fulfillment and personal happiness. Now, working in the field as a carpenter with Phase One Enterprises, she’s excited for what her future holds. Long-term, she wants to become a forewoman or journeywoman. Beyond her own career growth, Jisela is passionate about increasing awareness of opportunities for women in construction. “We need more women in the field—I’m lonely!” she jokes.

She advises other women to explore careers in the construction industry, even if it may seem out of reach. “It’s intimidating at first, but as long as you push through and aren’t afraid to make mistakes, you’ll be okay. The boys don’t know what they’re talking about half of the time!” She says.

Jisela’s experience is a testament to the opportunities available in the trades. With the right support and determination, any woman can build a future they love.
