The Scaling Up for Greater Impact campaign is making it possible to serve more students in the Electrician training through an evening/weekend option beginning in November 2024. As more electricians retire, this field is ripe for new talent, and Summit is ready to prepare students for entry-level roles in a variety of fields.

How did Summit help Tommy Manley ‘22?

Tommy’s electrician instructors at Summit sparked his interest in electricity. He soon became comfortable with basic electricity, hand and power tools, safety, and print reading. Hands-on projects honed his skills even more and gave him confidence.

After he graduated, Tommy moved to another city to seek a job in a union shop. But because this community lacked Summit’s strong employer network available in the Twin Cities, he couldn’t find a job in the field. Then he met a friend who encouraged him to seek an opportunity in a different direction.

“My friend works in nuclear engineering in the Navy,” Tommy explains. “His role opened my eyes to military job opportunities. Unlike other branches, the Coast Guard allows service members to choose their specialization, and this was a game changer for me.”

Within 2 weeks of signing up for Coast Guard service, Tommy began the branch’s 5-month electrician school, which expanded on the training he had at Summit. Now he serves on a training vessel, getting to use the skills gained from Summit coupled with his advanced training. He’s grateful that he could establish a career through quality training offered at no cost to him.

“The terminology and basic knowledge I learned at Summit laid a foundation for what I’m doing now,” Tommy says.

Thanks to Summit’s Electrician training, Tommy’s ship–and his career–are in good hands.
